Advanced Topics on Medical Defense Against Biological Agents
Botulinum Toxin

The U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID) will be offering a satellite broadcast entitled "Advanced Topics on Medical Defense Against Biological Agents: Botulinum Toxin" at 1:00 - 3:00 pm ET, on September 20, 2006 and on 25 October 2006. This program is targeted for military and civilian medical care providers, epidemiologists, laboratorians, pharmacists, first-responders and others who would assist in recognizing and managing casualties from a biological agent attack. Advanced Topics on Medical Defense against Biological &
Chemical Agent - 6 part series

The U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command and the Department of Veterans Affairs (Employee Education System and the Emergency Management Strategic Healthcare Group) originally sponsored this live, interactive, satellite broadcast as six 2-hour programs on “Advanced Topics on Medical Defense against Biological and Chemical Agents.” They are now available as a web cast, VHS tape, or DVD set. These programs provide detailed information for military and civilian medical and public health professionals in the recognition and management of biological and chemical casualties, and in notifying the appropriate response agencies. World-renowned experts from USAMRIID, USAMRICD, Department of Veterans Affairs, and other organizations presented these programs. The target audience is military and civilian medical care providers, public health professionals, clinical laboratory staff, first responders, and others who would assist in recognizing and managing casualties from a biological or chemical agent attack.

Increased concern about possible threats of chemical and biological terrorism has continued since the events of September 11, 2001 and the anthrax attacks in October 2001. Basic training for medical defense against biological and chemical agents is available through VHS tape and DVD sets from prior satellite broadcasts. More advanced and continuing education is now necessary to build clinical skills for medical defense. Military and civilian medical and public health professionals must maintain skills and become more proficient in recognizing that a biological or chemical attack has occurred, activating the appropriate agencies and personnel to investigate the event, treating the casualties, dealing with psychological effects, and preventing the spread of the agent. To build clinical knowledge, decrease impact on clinical schedules, and increase clinician attendance, the live, interactive, satellite broadcast on “Advanced Topics on Medical Defense against Biological and Chemical Agents” was created and aired. The format includes six 2-hour programs with 90 minutes of instructional material followed by 30 minutes of live question-and-answer.

1. Smallpox: Recognition & Response
2. Advanced Management of Nerve Agent & Sulfur Mustard Casualties
3. Vaccines against Biological Warfare Agents
4. Chemical Threat Agents: The Community Provider’s Perspective
5. Toxins as Biological Warfare & Terrorism Agents
6. Chemical Threat Agents: What Has History Taught Us?

These programs will inform and educate physicians, nurses, physician assistants, and other health care professionals about appropriate medical responses in the event of an intentional biological or chemical agent release.

If you missed the live satellite broadcast entitled “Advanced Topics on Medical Defense against Biological and Chemical Agents,” an alternative for this training is to view the program as a FREE archived web cast. All six programs are currently archived and ready for viewing. Register to view the program at www.biomedtraining.org under the "View Via Archived Web Cast" button and follow the links to www.swankhealth.com. When you are finished viewing, you may evaluate and receive credit (CME/CNE/CEU) at www.biomedtraining.org. A certificate of training will be presented after the evaluation for you to print locally. Registration information and specific course information can be viewed online at www.biomedtraining.org. If you cannot complete your registration online, please call Register America at 850-784-6002, ext. 16 for assistance.
