The United States military--highly trained, well equipped, and ready to meet the challenges of today.

But whether on a peacekeeping mission or a field deployment, it may face invisible enemies... bacteria, toxins, and viruses that can cause disease or even death in unprotected troops.  These biological threats may exist naturally in other parts of the world, or they could be deliberately used against our service members in an act of warfare or terrorism.

To protect our nation's fighting forces, the United States Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases--USAMRIID--conducts basic and applied research on biological threats resulting in medical solutions to protect the warfighter.

USAMRIID, located at Fort Detrick, Maryland, is one of several organizations within the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command.  It is the only laboratory in the Department of Defense, or DoD, equipped to study highly hazardous diseases that require maximum containment at Biosafety Level 4.

With highly trained scientists and specialized research facilities, USAMRIID is a unique national resource.
